Dr. Bill Metcalf

Dr. Bill Metcalf at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia (Adjunct Lecturer, Griffith School of Environment, and Research Methodologist, Griffith Graduate Research School), is one of the foremost scholars of intentional communities worldwide.
Past President of the International Communal Studies Association (Israel), and member of the Communal Studies Association (US), and Fellow of the Findhorn Foundation (Scotland), Dr. Metcalf has written numerous articles for scholarly journals such as Communal Societies and Journal of Utopian Studies.
As “International Correspondent” for Communalities magazine, he has written about many communities worldwide, including Findhorn in Scotland, Damanhur and Torri Superiore in Italy, ZEGG and Kommune Niederkaufungen in Germany, Yamagishi Toyosato in Japan, Dharmananda and The Wolery in Australia, and Riverside in New Zealand, for example.
Bill is author of seven books on intentional communities, including The Findhorn Book of Community Living (Findhorn Press, 2004); Herrnhut: Australia’s First Utopian Commune (co-authored with B. Huf, Melbourne University Press, 2002); The Gayndah Communes (Central Queensland University Press, 1998); Shared Visions, Shared Lives: Communal Living Around the Globe (Findhorn Press, 1996); and From Utopian Dreaming to Communal Reality: Cooperative Lifestyles in Australia (University of New South Wales Press, 1995).
He has authored and co-authored chapters about intentional community in Encyclopaedia of Leadership (Sage Publications, 2004), The Encyclopaedia of Community: From the Village to the Virtual World (Sage Publications, 2003), and Historical Encyclopaedia of Western Australia (University of Western Australia Press, 2008).
Bill is currently researching and writing the complete history of utopian communalism in Australia, with the working title, The Encyclopaedia of Australian Utopian Communalism.
