Response to article about interning at OAEC

(January 3, 2011) Hi folks,

Dawn Smith's article in this issue about interning at OAEC is nostalgic for me, as in the 1980s I lived at OAEC (Occidental Arts and Ecology Center) in Northern California, although it was called the Farallones Institute then. Welcome to the New Year! May we all find or create community this year!

Seeking help for Romanian Ecovillage Project

Dear Diana,

We are writing to ask if any of your readers can help us find financial partners so we can complete our ecovillage project in Alba Iulia, Romania. We've purchased a 200 ha plot where we intend to construct buildings with Earthship technology and other earth-bermed technologies like the buildings planned for Lammas Ecovillage in Wales. We put all of our own money into this, and were also counting on funds specifically made available for this project from the European Union. However, the funds have not been made available by the Romanian government and we are in great need of help.

We've planned the following features for the ecovillage: a restaurant serving organic food; a spa with ayurvedic and other natural therapies; small earth-bermed houses and a small hostel for visitors to the spa; woodworking and other crafts shops; a farrier; greenhouses for a vegetable market garden; a dairy goat business and much more.

If anyone reading Ecovillages newsletter can help us find partners or funds for this project, please contact us at the email address below. Thank you very much!

To Etienne Gernaze, author of “Ecovillages in Scandinavia”

Hello Etienne,

I just read your article about your media project “One Step Beyond” in the May/June 2010 issue of this newsletter.

WOW! I envy your trip! I love the Scandinavian countries. My part-Swedish partner Mandy and I recently completed a similar journey by bicycle around the USA visiting and filming 100 sustainable communities. Please see our Within Reach website.

We hope someday to visit sustainable communities around the world, including some of the ecovillages you visited in Scandinavian countries.

Do you have a media product like a DVD or an audio file or even a book or photograph exhibit from your journey? It looks like you were filming from the photos in the article.

By the way, I love the title of your project. “One Step Beyond” is similar to our project’s title: “Within Reach” . . . referring to sustainable communities being within reach, once we reach within.

Love and gratitude for your amazing project,

Ryan Mlynarczyk
